Paradigm Pods:

Envisioned to create a sense of respect and awe an insect might feel for the most mundane plant life, “Paradigm Pods” plays with scale to illustrate how powerful, beautiful and vibrant the seeming minutiae of nature can be.

These kinetic spheres invite the participation of the viewers. Located in a row parallel to the trail, they create a new construct for Piper’s Orchard. Each sphere rotates to reveal lines of nature prose and imagery. By rotating each sphere to a line, word or icon, the viewer creates his or her own visual poetry to complement the meditative beauty of the orchard. As the wonder of nature is indiscriminate and fleeting, “Kinetic Orchard Prose” invites the viewer to narrate their own experience and witness the visual prose of other viewers.

A theme of nostalgic influence or inherited histories informs my work. Nature and its role in our social fabric continue to shift paradigms. Where mankind was once at the mercy of nature, the roles have been reversed. “Nature”, in its tenuous state, will only thrive through conscientious actions on our part. To that end, I am interested in the nostalgia of nature; how can we return to the paradigm view of nature as the dominant entity?

Piper O’Neill was born in 1978 in Ouray, Colorado. She received her BFA from Parsons School of Design in New York City in 2001, and a Masters of Communication in Digital Media from the University of Washington in 2006. As an artist, sculptor and animator she explores notions of nostalgia and inherited histories and how those passed-down emotions inform our view of the world. She continues her education as a young artist by working as painting assistant to Dale Chihuly and sculpture assistant to Kiki Smith at the Walla Walla Foundry. She will install her second public sculpture commission in downtown Kirkland in October 2010.
