Above and Below
2011

Above and Below stands fifteen feet tall, seventeen feet long and approximately four feet in width. It rests comfortably on three triangulated appendages which are secured to the ground with concrete and rebar. It may look like it could walk off somewhere, but it is immoveable.

Above and Below is a curiosity. It is a gathering of sticks and branches forming a visual interpretation of the exhibitions theme of Heaven and Earth. There is a randomness, a chaos as well as an order to the lines creating the piece. Its presence asks the viewer to identify it, to categorize it, to investigate it.

The cast shadows are an integral part of Above and Below. The shadows reflect the piece, but are not a physical manifestation in themselves. They are a delicate latticework which is ephemeral, while the piece itself is very huge, substantial and somewhat clunky. These two opposing images mimic our relationship to Heaven and Earth, to life and to death, and demand that we identify the realm we inhabit somewhere in between.
