Cultivate(d): Heaven & Earth IX

Site Map H&E IX

Welcome to Cultivate(d): Heaven & Earth IX at Carkeek Park.

As curators of the Carkeek Heaven and Earth IV sculpture show, we chose to develop a theme that sparked imagination and to provide a depth of interpretation. The park provides a natural setting, on a bluff, with meandering trails throughout and serves as a community center for organizations, friends and family picnics. Several sites were assigned that are intimate, exposed or provided an introduction into the park and possible wonderment of ‘is that art’ in the trees?

We settled on the theme of “Cultivate” and added the past tense of “Cultivated” to create a possible timeline as well as a phase within the process, and to ultimately cultivate the imaginations of curious artists. The hope was for each artist to run with this while considering specific sites throughout the park. We did not want to identify themes within the theme and were delighted to have 28 artists respond across the range of what it means, what the result is, when we cultivate something, a relationship, or a community.

In our worldview, and the inspiration behind the theme, when we cultivate we invest in not only the outcome or hope but ourselves as well. Cultivating the earth to reap the reward of a garden or harvest is a natural leap when considering “cultivate/d”. Cultivating a community for a common good, statement or mission is another view. We selected the 5 artists based on their skill, quality, interpretation, durability of their structure and their statements. It was not an easy selection and the panel had a lively debate. We welcome and encourage park visitors to spend a little time at each site with the intention of cultivating your own imagination into the concept behind the result of the artists intention. Enjoy Heaven and Earth IV: Cultivate/d!
