Ancestor Chimes
2012

My father’s family settled here in America and raised oysters in the Puget Sound. I honor these family members, some of whom have passed on. On the oyster shells you will find stories about their time here. Some of the ink may fade over time just as memories do. The tree is a symbol of the connection between heaven and earth, so it is holds up my family’s tales. The shells dangle and move and our legacy travels to reach ancestors via the wind. I imagine they are pleased to be remembered in this beautiful place they once inhabited.

Bio:

Though I live in the California Bay Area, I have very strong ties to Washington. My father’s family lived in Poulsbo, raising oysters while living on a houseboat. He told wonderful stories of having a pet seal that used to swim around the house and rowing a boat to school with his sister. My grandparents worked hard day and night in the oyster beds. Alas, World War II came about and the family had to leave and was incarcerated at Tule Lake Concentration Camp in California. Most of his family did not return to Washington after being released after the war.

Years later, my father drove my mother and us four kids from California up to Seattle to spend many wonderful summers, visiting my aunts and uncles and cousins. As an adult artist I have reconnected with the area, exhibiting and teaching adult and youth workshops in Seattle.

I am an assemblage and installation artist who focuses on remembrance, connection, and storytelling and have exhibited throughout the Bay Area and Pacific Northwest. My art practice reflects a universal theme of story and healing with an emphasis on art as a spiritual practice.

I am the founder and curator of the Doctors Without Borders Art Auction in Half Moon Bay, California for the past five years, and own and run the Kitsune Community Art Studio in an old dairy barn in the same town.

In addition I am a member of the Asian American Women’s Artist Caucus and on the board of the Northern California Women’s Caucus for Art.

My education includes a Masters in Transformative Art from JFK University in Berkeley and a Bachelor’s of Science in Graphic Design from San Jose State University.
