Feeling Flight:
Galvanized steel wire and supports, with suspended, moving, aluminum tags.
6’ H x 6’ W x 1” , 2010

My installation for Heaven and Earth 2, re-interprets the aerodynamics of insect flight in a way that engages the visual and kinesthetic senses. My artwork is derived from current scientific studies that are tools for understanding the mechanics of flight. Butterflies are a kind of intermediary between heaven and earth; they begin their lives as homey, gravity-bound, crawling creatures and metamorphose into beautiful, light, flying beings that instill joy and wonder. The tags oscillate with ambient air currents, further evoking changing, flickering illusion of flight.

“I create situations that allow viewers to become aware of how they pick up information with all of their senses rather than vision alone. We perceive the world kinesthetically and through sound, touch, and smell as well as visually.” Ingrid Lahti, 2008

Currently, Lahti’s other outdoor artworks are located at the Convention Center Station in Tacoma, the entrance to the Les Gove Community Campus in Auburn and in Art Outside at Webster’s Woods at the Port Angeles Fine Art Center.
