Site 9: Miguel Edwards Seattle, Washington Rayo de Paraíso (Heaven's Lightning) 2012 There is not a more direct conduit between Heaven and Earth than a lightning bolt. Lighting is both a channel of transmission and a metaphor for transition, and it is the mysterious transition beyond life on earth that makes heaven forever pertinent to our existence here. With no transition there would be no Heaven relative to Earth. This years piece poses the question of Heaven: is it a phase shift or a place? Statement: I am a semi-abstract sculptor and photographer constantly finding new ways to explore beauty and locate hidden common denominators in the world we perceive. Underlying forms and concepts intrinsic in the dynamic between our sleeping and waking lives as well as the visual logic of human perception are explored through my three dimensional and film-based works. Time, chaos and intuition are the co-conspirators in my creative process. I try to create artworks that invite everyone to re-discover the curiosity we all had as children: to encourage us to see life as full of possibilities and to value our experience of the present. Bio: Miguel Edwards was raised in El Rito, New Mexico, the son of an inventor and a weaver. He currently splits his time between El Rito and Seattle, WA. He has exhibited internationally since 2003, and has been a practicing metal artist for more than a decade. He is currently represented by Shidoni Foundry and Galleries in Tesuque, NM, and Matzke Fine Art on Camano Island. Since 2009 Miguel has also been focusing some of his creativity and energy on enabling and empowering other artists in the varied capacities of educator, mentor, peer group initiator, and board member for Seattle's own CoCA (Center on Contemporary Art). |
