roots & vines: platica:
recycled & re-imagined plastic bags, wrapped & woven onto a tree snag.
2010

A mysterious unexpected form,
distant imagery, familiar in an intimate way.
A web of fiber,
a tangle of forest vine,
exposed and twisted roots,
fibrous tendrils clinging to the surface,
enveloping the decaying wood,
humbly feeding off the unforgotten.
Natures cycle of decay and rebirth, regeneration, renewal….
life.
For as long as I can remember I have been mesmerized with the creation of art using reclaimed materials, re-imagining them into unexpected forms; starting small but now working large, sculpture and installation, both interior and exterior, including temporary works in nature.

Nature, in its vast brilliance, is the original source and impetus for all my recent works.

I create biomorphic sculptural forms and installations subtlety expressing my ecological concerns. Designs conceived in my observations of nature, constructed reusing non-natural, indestructible materials, and then carefully placing them in the natural world where they can be investigated, contemplated then documented.

The element of surprise and unexpected discovery is an integral part of this vision. The viewer meanders unassumingly through the forest, takes pause….catching a glimpse of my work placed within the brush, tucked into a knot hole or twined around a branch or tree trunk. At first glance, they may blend into the landscape; lichen, fungus, root or vine, but at closer examination an unearthing of these other-worldly, timeless forms occurs.

This deliberate juxtaposition between form and material opens the door for subtle but infinite metaphorical meaning.
